OUR HISTORY
Greater Galilee Baptist Church was originally founded on Yorkmont Road in the southwest area of Charlotte, NC. On October 19, 1885, the land was secured by William and Sue Eller, along with Trustee Austin Foster, Frank James, and James Little. It was officially deeded to Galilee Baptist Church on October 7, 1887.
The original Galilee Baptist Church was a "Brush Harbor," a simple, hut-like structure made from wooden logs, sticks, and pine leaves, reminiscent of the living conditions of our African ancestors. During that time, several preachers served the church. In 1954, under the leadership of Rev. W.D. Owens, land was acquired on May Street, and a new sanctuary was constructed in 1956. As membership grew over the years, the congregation felt the need for a permanent pastor to guide them forward.
In 1968, Rev. Warren McKissick from Ebenezer Baptist Church, Charlotte, NC, and Sis. Josephine McKissick from Friendship Missionary Baptist Church, Charlotte, NC, became the permanent Pastor and First Lady of GGBC. Under Rev. McKissick's leadership, the church experienced significant growth and relocated to Wilmore Presbyterian Church on West Park Avenue. On July 5, 1970, GGBC officially moved into its new home, becoming Greater Galilee Baptist Church. Rev. McKissick served as Pastor for 35 years, achieving numerous milestones and leaving a lasting legacy of progress and achievement within the church.
Dr. Robert L. McGowens became Pastor of Greater Galilee Baptist Church in 2005, serving with distinction until his retirement in December 2024. During his tenure, he led major advancements in ministry, outreach, and infrastructure, leaving a lasting legacy, including licensing 15 ministers, obtaining 501(c)(3) status, launching the 2011 Vision Capital Campaign, and expanding outreach with five locations. Dr. McGowens' wife, Lady Terry McGowens, has been a steadfast partner in ministry, contributing to the church's growth and community engagement. Together, they have left a lasting legacy of faith, service, and progress at Greater Galilee Baptist Church.
In November 2024, Greater Galilee Baptist Church joyfully called Rev. Dr. Kia Hood-Scott to serve as Pastor and Leader. Dr. Hood-Scott’s appointment is a historic milestone, as she is the first woman pastor in the history of Greater Galilee. She, alongside her husband, brother George L Scott, Jr., brings a dynamic partnership rooted in faith, leadership and a heart for service. Together they embody a spirit of excellence, compassion and community-building that continues to strengthen and uplift the Greater Galilee family as we move boldly into the future.
